When Is Hail Damage NOT Repairable by PDR?

Cracked or chipped paint
If hail broke through the clearcoat, PDR alone won't restore appearance. The dent can still be PDR'd, but the chip will need touch-up paint at minimum.
Sharp creases on body lines
Body lines have less metal flexibility. A sharp crease across a body line may require body shop work or panel replacement.
Torn or punctured metal
Baseball-sized hail can tear sheet metal. Tears are not repairable by PDR — panels must be replaced.
Severely stretched aluminum
Aluminum loses memory faster than steel under severe stretching. Bad aluminum dents may require panel replacement.
Plastic panels and bumpers
PDR doesn't apply to plastic. Bumper covers and plastic fenders require plastic welding or replacement.
How shops handle the gray area
A good Dallas PDR shop will do hybrid repairs — PDR the panels that qualify, refer body work for those that don't. The estimate will line-item what's PDR and what's paint/replace.
