Filing a Texas Hail Damage Insurance Claim: Step-by-Step

    By Max Exteriors PDR · May 10, 2026 · 8 min read

Step 1 — Confirm you have comprehensive coverage

Hail is a "comprehensive" claim, not collision. Open your policy declarations page and look for "Comprehensive" or "Other Than Collision" with a deductible amount. If it's there, you're covered.

Step 2 — Don't call your agent first

Call a reputable PDR shop and get a written estimate first. Why? Because you want to know whether the damage exceeds your deductible before you put a claim on your record. If a $400 dent isn't worth claiming on a $500 deductible, skip it.

Step 3 — File the claim

Call the claims line printed on your insurance card (not your agent). You'll get a claim number on the spot. Ask the rep to email it to you along with the adjuster's contact info.

    Step 4 — Adjuster inspection

Some carriers send a field adjuster, others use photo apps, others do "drive-through" claims events after major storms. A good Dallas PDR shop will meet the adjuster on-site, walk every panel, and supplement anything missed.

Step 5 — Choose your shop (it's your right)

Texas law gives you the right to pick any licensed repair shop. Carriers will steer you to their DRP partners — that's fine if the shop is good, but you are not obligated. Pick the PDR specialist you trust.

Step 6 — Approve the repair

Insurance pays the shop directly. You pay your deductible (unless the shop offers deductible assistance). Repairs typically start within 48 hours of approval.

What if my claim is denied or low-balled?

Request a re-inspection with your PDR shop present. They will write a supplement detailing missed dents, sub-panel damage, or R&I labor. Carriers approve most documented supplements without dispute.
