What PDR is
Paintless dent repair is a technique that reshapes damaged sheet metal back to its original contour without sanding, body filler, or repainting. Specialized rods and glue pulls do the work; the factory paint stays exactly where it started.
Why your paint survives
Modern automotive paint (basecoat + clearcoat) is elastic. It stretches and compresses with the metal underneath. When hail dents a panel, the paint deforms with it. When PDR pushes the metal back, the paint follows. As long as the paint didn't crack on impact, PDR leaves zero trace.
What tools techs use
- Body rods: 6"–48" stainless rods with bent tips for pushing dents from behind.
- Glue tabs: Adhesive tabs that grip the dent surface so it can be pulled outward.
- Slide hammers and mini-lifters: For controlled outward force on glue tabs.
- LED light boards: Striped boards that turn invisible dents into visible shadows.
- Tap-down hammers: For finishing high spots after a pull.
What PDR can fix
Door dings, hail damage, minor creases, parking lot dents, sports ball impacts — anything where paint is intact and metal isn't torn.
What PDR can't fix
Cracked paint. Torn metal. Damage on plastic panels (different repair). Body line creases sharper than the metal can re-stretch.
Is it permanent?
